Purdue commitment Danny Etling struggled against 5A number one Carmel’s defense.

Etling finished the game just 6 of 16 for 109 yards and one interception as the Greyhounds defeated his Terre Haute South Braves 38-0 on Saturday.

In a game postponed from Friday due to severe weather, Carmel gained 466 yards of offense, including 323 on the ground, to just 185 total yards for Terre Haute South. Jack Thompson ran for 101 yards and a touchdown and Chris Perkins, just a sophomore, added 94 yards and two scores.

A total of 22 penalties were called in the game; 12 against Carmel and 10 against Terre Haute South.

After a scoreless first quarter, Carmel opened the scoring in the second quarter on a 15-play, 82-yard drive, finished by a nine yard touchdown run by Perkins.  Billy Stumbo later added a 35-yard field goal to give the Greyhounds a 10-0 lead at the half.  The Braves’ lone scoring threat of the game was turned back as the Greyhounds defense held on a 4th-and-goal from the one with just over four minutes left in the quarter.

The Greyhound offense exploded for 21 points in the third quarter on touchdown runs by Thompson and Perkins, and a four yard touchdown strike from John Lampe to Austin Pfenninger.  Perkins’ second touchdown came after an interception by Mitch Davis gave the Greyhounds the ball at the Terre Haute South 1-yard line.

Carmel’s lone score in the fourth quarter came on a 30-yard scamper by reserve quarterback Isaac James after a 31 yard run for a TD was called back the previous play for a holding penalty.

Carmel (4-0, 2-0 in MIC conference play) travels to winless Lawrence North next Friday.  Terre Haute South is now 2-2, and 1-1 in the MIC.
