Mother Nature might have saved Chatard.

Late in the first half, Chatard’s star running back, Pete Hartley, went down with a left knee injury. Though he eventually was able to walk without help, his status for the second half against Cathedral was uncertain.

At halftime, rain and lightning forced the rest of the game to be postponed until 3 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Central. Now, Chatard has the lead and time to get its workhorse healed. Hartley had 122 yards on 17 carries at the break.

Several other games were postponed, too.

ISL’s Craig Dragash was set to cover Carmel vs. Terre Haute South, but that game was postponed until 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

“The field was almost completely underwater,” Dragash said. “And that’s significant because with it being a turf field, it drains really well.”

ISL’s Ryan Naylor saw Westfield take a 7-0 lead over Brownsburg before the stadium was evacuated and the rest of the game moved to 7 p.m. Saturday.

In the Chatard-Cathedral game, Chatard’s Alex Kimack scored the only touchdown of the first half, a 1-yard run with 35 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Gino Gillum had nine carries for 79 yards in the first half for Cathedral, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A. Chatard is No. 1 in 3A.

Gillum broke for 57 yards on the first play from scrimmage, but Stan Jackson ran him down to save a touchdown. The Trojans held and forced a punt.

Chatard’s Joe Fagan fumbled after a catch early in the second quarter and Cathedral’s Connor Dykhuizen recovered at the Chatard 27. Cathedral failed to capitalize, though, after Gillum was stopped a yard short on a fourth-and-2 from the Chatard 19.

With the game still scoreless late in the first half, Hartley broke loose for a 71-yard run. Two plays later, Hartley was stopped near the goal line and helped off the field. On the next play, Kimack scored the only touchdown of the half on a 1-yard run.
