Samples: College football thoughts after Week 5

Lessons from Week 5 of college football:
1. There really isn’t much separation at the top of the Big 10, is there? And there really isn’t much separation from the top half to the middle, to be flatly honest. From the middle to the bottom, though…hoo boy…

2. Why is it that LSU can consistently make the easy games look more difficult on the scoreboard than they should be? It happened again against Towson.
3. Apparently you can put a pair of Top-25 teams on the same field and have one score 63 points…and lose. And lose? Yep. Wonder if the Baylor and West Virginia men’s hoops teams will put up a 70-63 score once they get matched up.
4. We knew Oregon was going to be good, but Mike Riley’s got something cooking in Corvallis with Oregon State. Arizona was motivated after getting thumped by Oregon the week before, and the Beavers got the job done on the road. Should be a very interesting Civil War…
Team bucking for a Top 25 berth? Cincinnati. Granted, that wasn’t the same Virginia Tech team from a few years ago, but the Bearcats continue to impress. Also on the list is UCLA for its bounce-back win over a sad Colorado squad (more on them later).
Teams now seriously wishing they could rewind the season:
Arkansas. Ragin’ Bacon take another nasty slip in their own grease. 58-10 to Texas A&M.
Georgia Tech. Remember when they should have beaten VaTech? Well, now the Ramblin Wreck are 2-3 after stumbling at home to Middle Tennessee.
The Colorados. Buffaloes and Rams are a combined 2-8, and in case you weren’t paying attention, they have already played each other.
UNLV. Loss to FCS Northern Arizona earlier this season continues to snowball. Latest example? A 35-13 thumping by Utah State.
Game I’m most looking forward to following this weekend: No. 4 LSU at No. 10 Florida. Not only should this be a humdinger of a game, but we’ll be able to catch the Purple and Gold Point After (in my mind, the best postgame call-in show I have ever heard) on the way home from our D-II game (Emporia State-Southwest Baptist, in case you cared).
