Pike’s Derek Moyers is Colts coach of the Week

From the Indianapolis Colts

Pike’s Derek Moyers has been named the Colts/NFL Coach of the Week, a program presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Moyers was selected after his Red Devils defeated Class 5A No. 3 ranked Ben Davis 35-25 in the opening round of the IHSAA State Football Tournament presented by the Indianapolis Colts.

The 2012 season marks the 13th year the Indianapolis Colts will be recognizing outstanding Indiana High School football coaches through the Colts/NFL Coach of the Week program, presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Derek Moyers and the Pike Red Devils started their postseason campaign on the right foot by upending Class 5A No. 3 ranked Ben Davis by 10 points. Pike avenged a 24-0 Week 2 loss from earlier in the season.

That served as a constant reminder for players and coaches this week as the team wore the score on their helmets during practice.

Coach Moyers attributed the win to their defense and getting an early lead. They led 14-6 at the half and after three quarters were up 21-12 almost seemingly dismissing any chance for a Giants’ comeback.

Coach Moyers enters his sixth season with the Red Devils and 12th year overall.  During his previous stop as the Head Coach of Cascade High School, Moyers received the Coach of the Week Award in the first week of the 2006 season following a 24-14 victory over Tri-West. This is the first Coach of the Week honor for Pike High School.

The Coach of the Week program was designed to recognize high school coaches who transform the best available athletes into high potential football players through their hard work and dedication to young people.

All high school head coaches in the state of Indiana are eligible regardless of their school size, league or division.  Coaches are evaluated on various factors including the coach’s impact on his team, school and community, as well as performance of the team.  The honorees are selected by a panel of high school football media, former athletic directors and other football representatives from all regions of the state.

Each Monday, following a high school football game weekend, one head coach will be announced.
