Southmoore looks to bounce back after a tough Week 1 loss to Tulsa Booker T. Washington.

Friday night’s opponent is Deer Creek, which opened with a 35-7 win over Edmond North.

Last year against Deer Creek, Southmoore rallied from a 30-3 deficit with just under seven minutes to play before losing 30-24. Many Sabercats players still have that game on their minds as they push ahead to the 7 p.m. matchup.

Southmoore quarterback Noah Peters had a rough outing last Friday, but several of his top pass catchers will return from injury this week.

Junior Devin Denny, a tight end who was second in touchdown receptions for the ‘Cats last season, will be back. Junior receiver Brennan Mason will return after missing last week with a shoulder issue.

Sophomore receiver Jalen Ross will reportedly be making his season debut Friday. This would mark his first game in a year since his leg injury last season. His exact role on the field is unclear, but expect to see a lot more of him as the season progresses.

Southmoore running back Markus Means rushed for 71 yards last week against a tough Booker T. defensive front.

The ‘Cats special teams made some big plays against Booker T. Kolton Bennett had a 79-yard kickoff return for the team’s only points and Michael Thompson blocked a punt.

A Ronnie Doddles-led Southmoore defensive line had its moments against Booker T. Deer Creek’s offensive line features left tackle Jacob Sexton, a four-star Oklahoma commitment.

Sophomore safety Skyler Mayer made some nice defensive plays. Sophomore linebacker Joe Wright made an impression.

Deer Creek’s defense has star power, too. Jevion Jones lit up the field last week for the Antlers with 12 tackles, a sack and a 58-yard pick 6. Jones also takes the field on the offensive side at wideout occasionally. Southmoore cornerbacks Kyus Henry and Trent Wetsiline will have their hands full against him.

This will be Southmoore’s first road trip of the season, so it is unknown how the Sabercats will perform on opposing turf. It will be a tough matchup, but expect a much stronger showing from the Sabercats this week.
