Cook, Blackmon pace IBCA Subway Players of the Week

Two 40-point scorers headline this week’s IBCA/Subway Players of the Week.

Cannelton senior Brandon Cook poured in 47 points and Fort Wayne Bishop Luers junior James Blackmon Jr. dropped in 44 in single games to earn recognition in the weekly recognition program organized by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

The high-scoring duo was joined by Rockville senior Lane Mahurin, South Bend Washington sophomore Tiara Murphy, Benton Central senior Caitlyn Tolen and Washington junior Ally Hunsinger as honorees for performances during the week of Dec. 3-8.

Blackmon and Murphy were cited in District 1, Mahurin and Tolen received accolades in District 2, and Cook and Hunsinger collected laurels in District 3.

Cook, a 5-10 guard, connected on 16-of-29 field goals, 6-of-13 3-pointers and 9-of-14 free throws en route to his outburst that came in a 79-73 setback to South Spencer. Cook added seven rebounds and six steals as the Bulldogs dropped to 2-2.

The 6-2 Blackmon sank 15-of-27 from the floor, 6-of-11 3-pointers and 8-of-10 free throws for his big game, which came in a 79-63 victory over Fort Wayne South Side. Blackmon also contributed eight rebounds and two assists as the Knights improved to 1-1.

Mahurin, a 6-7 forward, netted 32 points with six rebounds, four assists and four blocks while playing just three quarters in a 90-52 victory over South Vermillion. He converted 13-of-19 field goals, 1-of-2 3-pointers and 5-of-7 free throws as the Rox improved to 5-0.

Tolen, Hunsinger and Murphy had respective averages of 30.5 points, 26.5 points and 25.7 points in receiving girls’ honors.

The 5-11 Tolen began her week with 27 points as Benton Central posted an 81-39 victory over Rensselaer Central. She then followed with 34 points in a 60-45 win over West Lafayette as the Class 3A No. 1 Lady Bison improved to 8-0.

Hunsinger produced 31 points and nine rebounds to lead Washington to a 56-50 triumph over Evansville Memorial. The 5-9 forward then totaled 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Hatchets (5-2) defeated Eastern Greene 58-45.

The 5-5 Murphy excelled in a three-game week for South Bend Washington (7-2). She opened with 20 points in a 55-45 victory over Plymouth. She followed with 24 points and five steals in a 72-52 win over South Bend Adams. Murphy concluded her week with 33 points as the Panthers topped Fort Wayne Bishop Luers 70-59.

This is the fifth season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the first season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a primary sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its third season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “play hard and eat fresh.”

Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 2. Boys winners be selected from now through the week following March 23.
