Prep Roundball Roundup: Carmel, Tech win close ones

The top two games from this past week came down to a made three-point basket to win one game, and a missed three-pointer to come up short in the other one.

Here are the highlights from those games:

#1 Carmel 50, #6 North Central 49

With the 4th quarter clock winding down, Zach McRoberts rebounded a missed 3-point attempt by Ryan Cline, and found Michael Volovic, who drained his three to give the Greyhounds the victory.  Senior James Crowley led the Greyhounds with 18 points, Volovic added 16, and McRoberts finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Freshman sensation Eron Gordon led North Central with 21 points, 18 in the second half.

#10 Tech 67, #5 Cathedral 64

A missed three pointer at the end of the game by Irish sophomore Jalen Coleman was the difference as Tech defeated Cathedral.  The Irish were again without the services of IU-bound Collin Hartman, who is still out with an injury.  Junior Trey Lyles, who would have been Hartman’s teammate at IU until he de-committed and re-opened his recruitment, finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds to pace the Titans.  Coleman led the Irish with 24 points.  These teams could potentially meet again in the Hall of Fame Classic on December28th in New Castle.

Lots of great matchups this week in the AP top 10; here are the must-see games for the coming week:

Columbus North at #2 Pike

Columbus North is off to a 4-0 start behind 6’7″ sophomore Josh Speidel, who averages 16.5 points per game.  Evan Henry adds 15 points per contest, and in all the Bulldogs have four players who average in double figures for a team that averages 78.5.  Pike is off to a flying start of their own at 5-0, and they have four that average in double figures as well, led by seniors Jordan Pickett, at 6’0″ averaging 21.3 points and 6.3 rebounds, 6’0″ Taishaun Johnson at 18 ppg, and Zavier Turner and Jamie Rutherford each average around 12.  This should be a great up-tempo contest.

#7 Hamilton Southeastern at Zionsville

HSE features one of the state’s best in Zak Irvin, who averages 24 points for the 6-1 Royals.  Irvin also averages 10.6 boards and 2.4 steals.  Zionsville has two familiar names in Andrew Dakich, son of former IU player and coach, and current radio talk show host Dan Dakich, and Derek Smits, son of former Pacer Rik Smits.  Senior Dalton Judd leads a very balanced scoring attack for the Eagles at 13 points per game, followed by Smits at 12 points per game.

#3 Warren Central at Ben Davis

Warren Central continues their winning ways, defeating Fishers and Avon last week to improve to 4-0.  Devin Davis, who is bound for IU, has continued to impress after the opening game win over Cathedral.  Ben Davis is 2-1, with their only blemish being a one point loss to Pike.  Ben Davis is led by senior Tony Wills, who will be heading to Illinois State next year.  Should be a great MIC conference game.

#10North Central at #7 Hamilton Southeastern

Eron Gordon will get another chance against a top team in taking on the Royals.  They won’t match up against each other, but Gordon vs. Irvin should be fun to watch.  North Central is 3-2, but with their strength of schedule for their first five games, they are ranked #3 in the Sagarin ratings behind Pike and Carmel. who have given the Panthers their two losses.
