BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Here are some thoughts at halftime of the Old Oaken Bucket game, with Indiana leading Purdue 35-9 in the season finale for both teams:

1. Nice response from the Boilermakers early in the second quarter to get back in the game, but their defense, which has been completely overwhelmed, failed to do its part.

2. Indiana receiver Kofi Hughes and his ability to concentrate on deep balls, and make spectacular catches, shined through in the first quarter. After missing out on a bowl game in his four-year career, Hughes showed why his talent on a 30-yard gain in which he somehow kept his left foot inside the field of play while falling out of bounds.

3. Linebacker David Cooper notched two sacks to give him 5.5 for his career with aggressive rushes up the middle. He’s been a solid junior college addition for the Hoosiers, filling the key middle linebacker spot last season and moving outside this year. This is the first time an Indiana player had two sacks in a game since Zack Shaw did it against Ohio State last season.

4. After Purdue’s running game finally showed some signs of life last week, it’s giving them nothing this afternoon. Running backs have nine carries for a puny 23 yards.

5. Indiana’s Cody Latimer went over the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the season, becoming just the fifth player in school history to do so.

6. Seeing quite a bit of Purdue fullback Kurt Freytag, a senior who originally joined the team as a walk-on. He ran a pass route to draw away two defenders on Justin Sinz’ 1-yard touchdown catch and also was a lead blocker on some of Purdue’s better running plays.

7. Big third-and-1 conversion, with tailback Akeem Hunt patiently finding a seam, to the left of center Robert Kugler, to set up the Boilermakers’ first score on their third drive of the half. And the offense ultimately capitalized, Danny Etling’s pass on fourth-and-13, caught by Danny Anthrop at the 1. On first-and-goal, Etling floated a touchdown pass to wide-open tight end Justin Sinz.

8. Indiana’s Ryan Thompson was integrated into the defensive mix, replacing Michael Hunter at cornerback in the base package.

9. Purdue corners are struggling on the outside, whether in one-on-one or in zone, to cover Cody Latimer, who has four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown.

10. Indiana back Tevin Coleman warmed up but must have had trouble loosening up his injured ankle, even in 47 degree temperatures. After coming within 42 yards of a 1,000-yard season on the ground, Coleman hasn’t played today. Stephen Houston took over the No. 1 RB role in his absence and has five carries for 70 yards and two touchdowns.

11. Purdue freshman quarterback Danny Etling looks pretty good. He’s 15-of-20 for 142 yards and a touchdown. Completions of 18, 19 and 11 yards helped set up Paul Griggs’ 36-yard field goal that made it 21-9 with about six minutes remaining in the second quarter. At that point, Purdue was playing pretty respectably.

12. The Boilermakers get the ball to open the second half.
