BLOOMINGTON—Indiana’s defensive effort against Duke on Wednesday left a lot to be desired.

The Hoosiers got the point.

“I think we know our defense needed to get better and really worked on it the past two days,” senior forward Max Bielfeldt said after the Hoosiers’ 92-59 romp over Morehead State on Saturday.

“We wanted to go out there and take away their tendencies,” senior guard Yogi Ferrell added. “I feel like it’s another step as a team to come together collectively and play together on defense.”

No one’s saying Duke and Morehead State pose the same offensive challenge. But after allowing the Eagles to hit five of their first seven shots Saturday night, the Hoosiers shut the Eagles down.

Morehead State finished 16-of-51 from the field. Only one Eagle, former IUPUI Jaguar Lyonell Gaines, scored in double figures; he had 13 points off the bench.

And the Eagles, who came into Saturday night’s game tied with Louisville for the best scoring defense in the nation, had no answer for Bielfeldt and Thomas Bryant. Neither front-court player missed a shot from the floor. Bielfeldt was 5-for-5 with 12 points and Bryant was 4-for-4 with 14 points.

“Tonight we played with more aggressiveness,” Indiana coach Tom Crean said. “For us to continue to get better, it’s got to be attack-oriented and it’s got to be aggressive and it’s got to be smart. That’s what we’ve got to continue to build upon.”

Troy Williams (16 points), James Blackmon Jr. (15 points) and Ferrell (15) joined Bielfeldt and Bryant as double-figure scorers for the Hoosiers, who host IPFW on Wednesday night.
